dog in waterWith Summer just around the corner, it’s time to think about how to keep your dog cool when the days are hot and long. Whether it’s a cool mat, a cooling vest or cool tasty treats, there are ways to help your dog keep cool.

When you make treats for your dog you can control the ingredients and make healthy treats that are good for your dog. Please remember that these are only treats and you will need to limit their intake each day.

Why You Should Keep Your Dog Cool

We have to be careful with our dogs during hot weather, when they are susceptible to becoming overheated. Dogs can’t tell us when they develop symptoms so we have to watch and look for symptoms.

Heat exhaustion can cause diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and rapid breathing. It can quickly develop into a heat stroke.

Heat stroke can be fatal without treatment. Symptoms include impaired muscle function, confusion, increased heart rate, drooling, high temperature and a dog may collapse and lose consciousness.

Symptoms of Heat Stroke

-Constant Panting
-Restlessness
-Difficulty Walking
-Bright Red Tongue or Gums
-Vomiting
-Drooling
-Diarrhea
-Seizures
-Collapse

If your dog overheats and is showing symptoms of heat exhaustion or heat stroke, immediately take your dog to your veterinarian or the closest animal hospital for treatment.

Make some cool treats for your dog to help cool them off on those hot days. Who doesn’t like a frozen treat on a hot day? I think we all do!

All of the treats below are easy to make and healthy for your dog. I use healthy ingredients such as fruits, coconut oil, yogurt,

Ice Cubes

I like to take some blueberries or strawberries and place them in an ice cube tray. Then fill with water and freeze. The ice will help cool your dog off and the fruit will be a tasty and healthy treat.

After frozen, you can remove the ice cubes from the tray and place them in a freezer bag or container for storing in the freezer.

Peanut Butter Drops

Mix equal parts of smooth peanut butter and coconut oil. Mix until smooth. Using a tablespoon, drop on waxed paper and freeze until frozen.

After the drops are frozen, you can remove the drops from the waxed paper and place them in a freezer bag or container for storing in the freezer.

Banana Chips

Peel a banana and cut into ¼ inch slices. Place the slices on a cookie sheet lined with waxed paper in a single layer and lightly sprinkle with cinnamon. Freeze until frozen.

After the banana slices are frozen, you can remove the slices from the waxed paper and place them in a freezer bag or container for storing in the freezer.

Watermelon Slushie

Combine one cup of watermelon chunks and one cup of ice cubes. Blend until smooth and place in a bowl for your dog.
